REXBURG — Police have charged a 26-year-old Rexburg man with four felonies after he allegedly broke into four cars earlier this month. He’s also facing one misdemeanor count of driving one of those vehicles without permission.

Officers arrested Ellijul Berry Dec. 8, after he allegedly broke into four unlocked cars starting around 12:25 a.m. where he stole numerous items.

According to police reports, Berry’s crime spree began around 12:25 a.m. Dec. 4. Two of the cars belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and were driven by missionaries.

Police stated that Berry first broke into a gray Toyota RAV4 belonging to the church.

The keys had been left in the car. A tracking device later showed Berry drove the vehicle around town from 12:25 a.m. to 5:02 a.m. before ditching the car at the Brigham Young University-Idaho stadium.

During his drive throughout Rexburg, Berry allegedly broke into a silver Subaru Impreza parked at Sundance Complex. There he allegedly stole a woman’s purse, insurance cards and other forms of identification, reported police.

From there Berry headed to the LDS Church at 345 S. 3rd West where he burglarized a gray GMC Sierra. Police reported he stole the owner’s wallet, financial transaction cards, insurance cards and other identification cards. Berry is then alleged to have broken into a white Ford F-150 parked at W. 3rd South at the Sundance Complex. Police reported Berry took a missionary’s name tag, a disposable camera and $2 in cash. Police say that he next broke into a Honda Accord where he again stole personal items.

As Barry left the Toyota at the stadium, police say that he took with him a $150 suit coat belonging to a missionary.

Video footage later showed Berry purchasing Salt Lake Express bus tickets to Idaho Falls.

“He gave his name to the staff,” police reported.

The video also shows Berry rummaging through various bags and luggage prior to leaving Rexburg.

“A driver’s license of Berry’s was found and matched video footage of Berry,” police reported.

He again purchased several Salt Lake Express bus tickets and is believed to have been planning to travel to Los Vegas.

Berry faces up to 10 years in prison and a $50,000 fine for each felony count. He was assigned Trent Grant as a public defender.
