THATCHER, Utah — Police say a 16-month-old-boy’s body was found by his father the night of Aug. 13 in an irrigation pipe at Thatcher, Utah, less than an hour after the father called to report the boy missing.

According to a press release from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office, Keith Weaver called dispatch at 9 p.m. to report that one of his sons, Jackson Scott Weaver, had been playing with his brothers in the family’s yard when the parents noticed he was gone.

The home in rural northern Utah near Tremonton is near an irrigation canal and ditch.

“At the time it was feared he had fallen into the canal near the residence,” a press release issued late Monday by the sheriff’s office stated.

Searchers from all Box Elder County agencies responded to the scene, including Box Elder Scuba and Search and Rescue. The search began near the canal, and the canal company shut off the water supply to the area.

Keith Weaver started looking in the area of a structure that diverts water from an open ditch into a 12-inch PVC pipe system that runs above and below ground in sections. Weaver followed the pipe to where it surfaced and started taking it apart by section, and found Jackson more than 500 yards from the opening near the home at about 9:45 p.m.

Responders were on the scene to administer aid, but the child was deceased by the time he was found. Investigators on the scene determined that it was a “tragic accident and no foul play of any kind is suspected.”

The boy’s body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy.
