ATLANTA — Two South Idaho residents, a man and a 12-year-old child, died from what appears to be carbon monoxide poisoning during a camping trip over the weekend.

Elmore County Sheriff Mike Hollinshead said the sheriff’s office received a call Sunday night from a family member stating two people were overdue returning from their camping trip.

The two hunters were located in the early morning hours Monday at a camping site near the Atlanta area near Middle Fork Road, Hollinshead said.

Hollinshead would not release the names of the deceased out of respect to the family, but KTVB reports the two found dead are Gene Mitchell, 46, and Armani Castro, 12, both of Caldwell.

It appears the two died from carbon monoxide poisoning, according to Hollinshead. However, he said the Elmore County Coroner is still working to find the official cause of death.

Hollinshead said there was no foul play involved in this incident.

“They were heating the trailer and didn’t have an alarm,” he said.

Hollinshead said, especially during winter, that carbon monoxide alarms are valuable.

“They’re important to use,” he said, “especially in closed areas.”
