POCATELLO — The Portneuf Greenway Foundation has announced two sections of paved, accessible trail in Pocatello have been completed.

With this completion, the trail footprint has reached more than 20 miles, according to a news release from Portneuf Greenway. A ribbon-cutting celebrating this milestone will be held at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot of the Red Lion Hotel.

The community is invited to the ribbon-cutting where attendees can walk or bike these new sections and hear from trail supporters.

The Outback Trail runs from the Monte Vista overpass to Pocatello Creek Road. The Connection Communities Trail connects Pocatello Creek Road to the Portneuf Wellness Complex.

ICCU provided $100,000 for the Connection Communities Trail, and the Idaho Department of Transportation provided support by including the trail in its Interstate 15 renovation project. Several other monetary donations from various community members also made this project possible.

Dan Harelson, board president of Portneuf Greenway Foundation, said in the news release this project is one of the most exciting extensions of the Greenway ever completed.

“We are proud to support construction of trails in Pocatello and Chubbuck that benefit residents who not only enjoy the outdoor recreation opportunities a paved network of connected trails provides, but also in building enhanced routes for commuters who utilize the trails for biking or walking to and from work,” Harelson said in the news release.

Community members and business owners who attend the ribbon-cutting will also have the opportunity to learn how they can contribute to future trail maintenance and expansion plans.
