Oscar winning movie “Selma” plays this Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Bengal Theater at the ISU Pond Student Union, with a 4 p.m. show on Saturday also. This highly acclaimed film stars David Oyelowo in the story of Martin Luther King’s campaign to secure equal voting rights via the famed historic civil rights march in Selma, Alabama. “Needless to say, Dr. King’s message has never been more relevant,” writes US Weekly, while the Seattle Times writes, “There’s an urgent realism in the storytelling, as if we’re seeing this just in time. “The Simon and Garfunkel Story” is scheduled for Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Jensen Grand Hall at the Stephens Performing Arts Center. This immersive concert-style tribute show recreates the magic and authenticity of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel on stage and chronicles the amazing journey shared by the Grammy award-winning folk rock duo. The show features a set list of nearly 30 songs and uses state-of-the-art video projection, photos and original film footage, while a full live band will perform all of the hits. Golden Globe winner “One Battle After Another” plays this Sunday at 3:30 and 7 p.m. in the Bengal Theater. Nominated for nearly all the top critics’ awards, this presumptive Oscar frontrunner follows an ex-revolutionary (Leonardo DiCaprio) living in hiding with his daughter until a deranged army colonel (Sean Penn) tracks them down and they must reunite with their former comrades in a fight for their lives. Looking ahead to next week, the Idaho Museum of Natural History at ISU will host Dr. S. Matthew DeSpain on Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. in Frazier Hall for a presentation of “Cartographic Encounters and a Rediscovery of the Far West Fur Trade.” A key figure in this popular story of exceptionalism and the “opening of the West” is Jedediah Smith; however, Smith’s “discoveries” resulted from numerous encounters with Indigenous peoples who informed and guided him with Indigenous cartographic knowledge through various Indigenous geopolitical worlds. The presentation and film will explore these implications and more. Dr. DeSpain is a professor of history and director of Native American Studies at Rose State College in Oklahoma. He served the Chickasaw Nation in their Culture and History Division and taught at Oklahoma University in both history and Native American Studies before landing at Rose State. And Golden Globe-nominated “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” will be shown on Feb. 1 at 4 and 7 p.m. in the Bengal Theater. This story about Bruce Springsteen focuses on the making of his 1982 album, “Nebraska,” and his personal struggles with fame, depression and his difficult family past, set against the backdrop of his upcoming massive success with “Born in the U.S.A.” Linda Holmes of NPR says, “This Jeremy Allen White performance is extraordinary, and I think he’s riveting,” while Rolling Stone adds, “What Cooper has given audiences here is way more compelling than a live-action greatest-hits compilation.” Admission is $3 for the public, $2 for ISU staff and free for ISU students with a valid Bengal ID.
