F. C. “Chuck” Humphrey was elected commander of Pocatello American Legion Post 4 at its March 11 meeting. He succeeds Chip Wanglin, who has been the post commander for the last three years. Humphrey is a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served as a platoon leader in the First Infantry Division from September 1965 to September 1966. He is a life member of the American Legion, the nation’s largest veterans organization.

The elected first vice commander was Bruno Himmler. John White was reelected second vice commander. John Warner was elected post chaplain; Gary Davis, post historian; and Chester Avery, sergeant-at-arms. G.A. “Woody” Woodman was reappointed post adjutant and finance officer.

The Pocatello post has 200 members and is affiliated with the Idaho Department of The American Legion. The post was chartered in 1920, one year after the founding of the national Legion at a two-day meeting in Paris in March 1919.

Post 4 supports several activities each year: an oratorical contest, Boys State, programs on Memorial and Veterans Day, the Field of Heroes, American Legion Baseball and a food convoy conducted by the American Legion’s Idaho Department.

The post meets on the second Wednesday of each month in the Bannock County Veterans Memorial Building ( BCVMA), starting at 7 p.m. Any veteran who has served 180 days in the military since Dec. 7, 1941, is eligible to join.
