BANCROFT — A 58-year-old Blackfoot man died Saturday after the side-by-side he was driving overturned on Kelly Toponce Road near Bancroft.

Jlee Smith was driving a UTV northbound on Kelly Toponce Road with a 66-year-old male passenger, also from Blackfoot, around 5:55 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, authorities said.

The side-by-side left the roadway and overturned.

Neither Smith nor his passenger was wearing a seat belt, Idaho State Police said.

Both men were transported via ground ambulances to Caribou Medical Center in Soda Springs. Smith succumbed to his injuries at the hospital Saturday evening. The passenger, whose name hasn’t been released, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Caribou County Coroner Casey Batterton released the name of the deceased on Sunday and expressed sincere condolences to Smith’s family and friends.

The crash remains under investigation by Idaho State Police.
