Community supporting young mom following husband's death

Trandyn Garner, of Rexburg, was killed Tuesday following a car crash. Here he’s shown with his wife Laura and their two sons Landyn, 5, and Asher, 1.

REXBURG — A young mother has been the recipient of much goodwill and generosity following the death of her husband early Tuesday morning.

Laura Garner, 26, wants to thank everyone for their kindness and the monetary donations they’ve made to help her and her sons.

“I just want to say that it’s an unexpected and appreciated amount of love,” she said.

Garner’s husband, 28-year-old Trandyn Garner, of Rexburg, was killed Tuesday morning after his car struck a moose on U.S. Highway 20 near milepost 354.

Trandyn Garner was driving to Ashton where he worked as a carpenter framing homes.

According to an Idaho State Police report, Garner was driving eastbound on U.S. Highway 20 in a 2017 Hyundai Elantra when he hit the moose that was crossing the road. Garner was wearing his seat belt.

“The driver broadsided the moose and went off the right shoulder,” the report said. “The vehicle struck a power pole and rolled, came to rest on its top.”

Garner died at the scene. The highway was blocked for about three hours while police investigated the accident.

The Garners had been together for eight years and were the parents of two sons: Landyn, 5, and Asher, 1.

Laura Garner says that Trandyn Garner was an incredible husband and father. He would also be grateful for the outpouring of support for his wife and sons, Laura Garner said.

“Trandyn would try to make sure (something) was in place for me and the boys. I feel that’s very much in his fashion. He’d be pleased,” she said.

Laura Garner says she’s been taking one day at a time and says she’s been greatly comforted by all the concern she’s received.

“I’ve been trying to individually thank as many people as I can. I wish I could do more to extend my gratitude.”
