Century 60, Rigby 57

    The Diamondbacks, led by Henny Hearn’s 29 points, held off the Trojans for a 60-57 victory Thursday night in Rigby.

    The win locked up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming district tournament for the D-backs.

    “We jumped on them early,” said Century head coach Chris Shuler. “My girls wanted it more.”

    Sarah Holt added 12 points.

    Century was able to hit some big free throws down the stretch to keep Rigby at bay.

    “Overall, it paid dividends and we made free throws,” Shuler said.

    Century (15-3, 8-1 4A 5-6 District) plays at Skyline Tuesday.

    The Lady Cowboys had little trouble with Clark County Thursday night as they cruised to a 38-12 victory in Bancroft.

    Emily Simons led the way for North Gem with 14 points.

    “We had a girl that stepped up a played real well in Emily,” said head coach Joe Benglan. “It was her best game of the season. She found the weak side of their zone, posted up and finished.”

    Courtney McBride and Bailey McCulloch added eight points apiece for the Lady Cowboys.

    “We executed a lot better in this game,” Benglan said.

    North Gem (11-7, 8-2 league) hosts Mackay Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on senior night.

    The Cougars took down defending state champion North Fremont 51-33 Thursday night in Ashton.

    After scoring just 14 points in the first half, the Cougars exploded for 21 in the third and 15 in the fourth.

    “We did a good job executing and we got some good looks,” said Firth head coach Sharla Cook. “The kids played really good team ball.

    “Any league win is a big win. It was important for us to play well.”

    Bailey Nelson led the way for the Cougars with 12 points.

    Firth (12-5, 3-3 2A 6th District) plays at Grace today at 7 p.m.

Malad 45, Bear Lake 39

    The Dragons beat the Bears 45-39 Thursday night in Montpelier behind 13 points from Brooke Sorensen.

    Malad led 33-20 entering the fourth quarter, but lost three starters — one to injury and two fouled out. The Bears scored 19 points to turn a blowout into a close contest.

    “We got into foul trouble and Bear Lake shot the ball well in the fourth quarter,” said Malad head coach Bob Sorensen. “It was a hard-fought game and we ended up eking it out.”

    The Bears, still missing three starters this season, are beginning to find their way.

    “Our underclassmen are stepping up and starting to find their roles,” said head coach Brian Nate. “We’re playing good ball. We just have to keep our heads up and make sure we’re healthy for districts.”

    Malad (7-10) plays at Aberdeen Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

    Bear Lake hosts Marsh Valley today at 7:30 p.m.

    The Russets survived a tough road trip to Driggs as they took down the Redskins 52-49 in double overtime Thursday night.

    Indy Young scored 16 points for the Russets as they moved to 2-1 in 3A 6th District play this season.

    “Indy played as well tonight as she has all season,” said Shelley head coach Burke Davis. “She hit four free throws in the second overtime to help us.”

    Shelley, 4-13 overall, hosts Sugar-Salem Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
