POCATELLO — To make up for lost years from their childhood, Kam and Kieran Yancy share a football field as adults.

The brothers, who are separated by 12 years, are taking their college football journeys together as coach and player.

Kam Yancy, Idaho State's second-year cornerbacks coach, has helped Kieran land roster spots at ISU and, previously, Oregon State. The brothers spent two years together at OSU before moving to Pocatello last summer.

When Kam was hired by Idaho State, he told his new colleagues about an explosive running back looking for a new opportunity.

“The first thing I thought of when I got this job was to bring him,” Kam said after Wednesday's practice at the ICCU Practice Fields.

Kieran was a walk-on at Oregon State after beginning his college career at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California. While he was a member of Oregon State's scout team and never saw game action, he's on scholarship at ISU and was the team's primary kick and punt returner last season.

The 5-foot-5, 178-pound senior is a running back, but has taken reps with the Bengals' receivers early in spring camp to boost his ability as a slot insert.

While Kam and Kieran don't interact much during practices (their position groups rarely overlap), they live together and embrace the opportunity to be mutually supportive.

“I feel like this is a part of my life where he's necessary," Kieran said. "He's going to help me grow as a player, and (I) help him grow as a coach.”

For Kam, spending each day with his younger brother is a front-row view of Kieran's maturation.

It also allows him to be the protective older brother Kieran could have resented as a kid, but embraces today.

“It's more of a comforting thing for me knowing that he's OK, knowing that he's in the best situation for him,” Kam said. “I get to go home with him and have a friend. It's been even more of an experience for me to see him grow as an athlete, because I'm the only person in the family who gets to see him actually mature every single say. That's the best part about it is actually being able to witness him grow as a man in the program. It's humbling to bring him around with me.”

FOUR BENGALS PARTICIPATE IN PRO DAY

Idaho State held pro day workouts Wednesday in front of scouts from multiple NFL teams.

The event was closed to media and the public. The participants were linebacker Mario Jenkins, defensive lineman JonRyheem Peoples and offensive linemen Skyler Phillips and Chase Collins.

ISU head coach Rob Phenicie said scouts from the Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns and one other NFL team attended. The workouts took place in Holt Arena and the Jared Allen Strength and Conditioning Center. ISU is not releasing the results of the workouts. Phillips will be available for media interviews Friday.
