CROSS COUNTRY

The Preston boys and girls cross country teams won the varsity Division II race in the Bob Firman Invitational at Eagle Island State Park in Boise on Saturday.

The Indian boys finished with 82 points to edge Sugar-Salem (96) and Shelley (98). Russets senior Mark Crandall took first in the race in 16 minutes, 14.53 seconds, and was followed closely by teammates David Searle in fourth (16:43.45) and Chase Barrow in fifth (16:43.61). Preston’s Kaden Shumway finished seventh in 16:48.16 and Indians senior Kaleb Fenton took 12th in 17:04.78. Preston’s Jonah Wilson and Kye Christensen rounded out the top 20.

Preston junior Billie Hatch won the girls Division II race in 19:28.06. Teammates Aunika Crowther and Ali Shumway finished 13th and 14th, respectively, to pace the Indians (89). The Shelley girls took second with 103 points, led by junior Paytin Drollinger in ninth place with a time of 20:27.63. Sophomore Brinn Crandall took 12th and freshman Karlie Callahan finished 22nd.

In the girls elite race, Shelley senior LeAnn Larkin finished 28th in 19:17.45, a new personal best. Shelley’s Klarissa Andersen also set a new PR with 19:23.69, good for 31st.

The Highland boys finished seventh in the Division I race with 237 points. Senior Dallin Rushing took 14th with a personal-best time of 16:42.50, and senior teammate Jon Carlson finished 17th overall in 16:43.80. Rams sophomore Brenden Kilgore finished 44th in 17:19.50, a new personal best.

In the girls Division I race, Century took 10th with 249 team points. Junior Brook Chilton finished 18th in 20:03.52 and junior Marissa Nelson followed in 24th with a time of 20:30.39. D-backs sophomore Burkleigh Yost took 34th in 20:44.80.

Highland finished 17th in the girls Division I race, led by sophomore Anna Sanford. She finished 22nd overall in 20:22.70, and sophomore teammate Jill Parry took 42nd in 20:57.49, a personal best.

Pocatello senior Molly Vitale-Sullivan shattered her personal best with a third-place finish in the Division I race. Vitale-Sullivan took third with a time of 19:16.90. Her previous best was 19:35.05.

Shelley senior and two-time defending 3A state champ Austin Stewart finished 12th in the boys elite race. He crossed the tape in 15:48.82, the fastest time for an Idaho runner in the race. Poky freshman Caleb Armstrong finished 55th in 16:32.67.

Timpanogos (Utah) and Great Oak (California) won the boys and girls elite races. There were 133 competitors in the girls elite race and 183 on the boys side.

VOLLEYBALL

Bonneville-Hillcrest Classic

CENTURY

The Diamondbacks took second in the gold bracket of the Bonneville-Hillcrest Classic volleyball tournament Saturday in Idaho Falls.

Century defeated Middleton (26-24, 25-21), Shelley (25-23, 21-25, 15-11), Sugar-Salem (25-23, 25-18) and defending 5A state champ Idaho Falls (25-22, 16-25, 15-11) to reach the championship match against Skyview.

The Hawks downed Century 25-21, 25-20 in the finals. Skyview and Century have combined to win the last five Bonneville-Hillcrest classics.

“We did not play well in the final,” said Diamondbacks coach Pauline Thiros. “We did not pass the ball in the end. You can’t beat anybody if you don’t pass.”

Despite the loss to end the day, Thiros said she was pleased with the weekend overall.

“I think Skyview is picked to win 4A this year. That’s the team everybody’s gunning for,” Thiros said. “I’d pick them to win, too. But I really, really liked what I learned about them today. We’ll be preparing for the state tournament for all the good teams we’ll see.”

Freshman Zoe Thiros paced the offense with 54 kills, 31 digs and seven aces. Kaitlyn Christensen led the defense with 48 digs, 21 kills and six aces, Annika Eames had a team-high eight aces and Lexi Moore dished out 130 assists.

Century (20-4) plays in a quad with Idaho Falls and Skyline at home Thursday before heading for the Claim Jumper Classic tournament at Bingham High School.

POCATELLO

The Indians went 2-3, finishing atop the bronze bracket Saturday at the Bonnevile-Hillcrest Classic tournament in Idaho Falls.

Pocatello beat Wood River (21-25, 25-23, 15-12) and South Fremont (25-21, 25-27, 15-10) to end the weekend. The Indians were bested by South Fremont, Hillcrest and Fruitland in pool play early Saturday.

Pocatello didn’t win a single set at the tourney last year and ended on a high note this time, even without starting libero Zoey Wright (illness).

“We played well against some of the better teams,” said Poky coach Bryant Neibaur. “That’s all I really wanted from my kids in this tournament.”

The Indians (9-20, 1-3 4A District 5-6) play Wednesday at Preston.

BOYS SOCCER

CENTURY 2, RIGBY 0

The D-backs played a man down for most of the second half, but still beat Rigby 2-0 Saturday on the road.

“We still dominated the flow of the game,” said Century coach Rocky Rhoads.

Senior Dan Mende was hit with a red card early in the second half.

Zac Christensen knocked in a goal midway through the first half and Brandon Bob chipped in another late in the second.

Century (7-1-1, 4-0-1 4A District 5-6) plays Highland on Tuesday at Bannock County Fields.

BURLEY 1, PRESTON 0

Preston locked Burley down defensively, but the Bobcats took advantage of a second-half miscue and hung on to win 1-0 Saturday in Burley.

Burley intercepted a goal kick and dribbled it in around the 50th minute.

“They capitalized on a chance they had,” said Indians coach Robert Bowles, adding Preston showed good ball movement and had strong shots on goal saved by the Burley keeper.

Preston (3-10, 1-4 4A District 5-6) plays Tuesday at Blackfoot.

SUGAR-SALEM 3 , MARSH VALLEY 0

Marsh Valley lacked strong passing and was handled 3-0 by Sugar-Salem on Saturday at home.

“We were having a hard time connecting passes so we didn’t have much offense today,” said Eagles coach Justin Larson.

The Diggers led 1-0 at halftime and added a pair of goals in the second.

Marsh Valley (4-7, 3-1 3A District 5) hosts American Falls on Tuesday.

SHELLEY 2, SNAKE RIVER 1

Snake River lost a 2-1 battle Saturday at Shelley.

The Panthers’ Martin Anderson converted a penalty kick around the 30th minute to bring

Snake within 2-1. The Russets scored both goals early in the first half.

“It was just a big battle,” said Panthers coach Jose Carranza. “They were giving it all they got, and even though we took the loss I really like how my team performed.”

Snake River (6-7, 2-1 3A District 5) plays Tuesday at Aberdeen.

GIRLS SOCCER

CENTURY 4, RIGBY 0

The Diamondbacks scored two goals each half and coasted to a 4-0 win over Rigby on Saturday at home.

Courtney Handlen scored twice and Monica Behrend and Elle Mann chipped in a goal apiece.

“Lots of people got to play. We played really good soccer and we won,” said Century coach Jamshid Roomiany. “That’s all there is to it.”

The D-backs (7-1-1, 4-0-1) play Highland on Tuesday at home.

SUGAR-SALEM 3, MARSH VALLEY 2

The Diggers started fast with three goals in the first half, and Marsh Valley couldn’t overcome the early deficit, losing 3-2 Saturday at home. It was the Eagles’ first loss of the season.

“They were there physically, but not mentally,” said Marsh Valley coach Rachelle Gilbert.

Lindsi Nichols scored off a corner and McKenzie Gunter chipped in a score in the second half.

Gilbert said the Diggers had five shots on goal all day, but unluckily for Marsh, three of them found net.

Marsh Valley (12-1, 6-0 3A District 5) plays American Falls on Tuesday at home.
