Veder was working for The Associated Press when he captured the famous photo in March 1973 at Travis Air Force Base. It shows Lt. Col. Robert L. Stirm reuniting with his family after being a prisoner of war in Vietnam. Veder was born in Berkeley, California in 1926 to immigrants from Russia. He covered significant events, including protests and political figures. He retired from AP in 1993.
