The Venice Film Festival is set to kick off the fall film festival season with its 83rd edition. Stars like Robert Pattinson, George Clooney and Penélope Cruz are expected to attend. This year, attention may focus on Alex Gibney's documentary about Elon Musk, which explores his rise and power. Other notable films include Julia Loktev's “My Undesirable Friends: Part II — Exile,” about independent Russian journalists, and the Gaza-focused documentary “NAZA.” The festival also highlights the ongoing issue of gender disparity, with only one female director in the main competition. The festival runs from Sept. 2 through Sept. 12.
Tim Curry has died at 80. The beloved character actor created a gallery of delicious, loony villains for stage and screen. Curry gained fame as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” an iconic role that became a cultural touchstone. He also played the smug concierge in “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.” His longtime friend and manager Marcia Hurwitz says he died Tuesday night at his home in Los Angeles. No cause was disclosed. He had suffered a stroke in 2012 that put him in a wheelchair. Curry earned three Tony nominations — for “Spamalot,” “My Favorite Year” and “Amadeus” — and an Emmy nod in 1994.

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" continues to dominate the box office, holding the top spot for the fourth weekend. It added $39 million from 4,006 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, bringing its North American total to over $854.9 million. This puts it on track to surpass "Avengers: Endgame" as the second highest-grossing domestic release ever. "The Odyssey" became Christopher Nolan's highest-grossing film, adding $19.5 million domestically and $68 million internationally. Meanwhile, "Insidious: Out of the Further" earned $25.3 million, and "Mutiny," starring Jason Statham, opened with $7.5 million. The summer box office has reached $4.4 billion in North America.
Two dinosaur movies made a modest impact at the North American box office this weekend. “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” and “The End of Oak Street” battled for third place, behind “Spider-Man” and “The Odyssey.” According to studio estimates on Sunday, the Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor movie had a slight edge with $21 million, while the animated pups earned $20.5 million. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” remains on top, adding $70 million domestically and surpassing $2 billion globally. “The Odyssey” stayed in second place with $23.2 million for a global total of $1.2 billion. Overall, the box office is strong, with the summer season reaching around $4.2 billion.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” continued its blistering pace in theaters, collecting $144.5 million domestically over its second weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. And Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” set a new high for the director. “Brand New Day” has rapidly accrued $1.67 billion worldwide in just 10 days, on track to become among the biggest blockbusters ever. It took only seven days to become the highest grossing movie of the year. Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” also crossed $1 billion. In its fourth weekend, the Universal Pictures release added $31.5 million domestically for a global total of $1.1 billion. That's a new career-best for Nolan.
