West Side advanced to the 2A District 5 title game after wins Saturday against Soda Springs and Malad in the district tournament at Malad High School.

The Pirates defeated Soda Springs, 31-29, 25-19, 25-19 before beating defending district champion Malad, 28-26, 25-18, 12-25, 25-23. It was Malad’s first loss since the Peg Peterson tournament Sept. 1.

“My girls came out and played strong,” West Side coach Jeri O’Brien said. “They just played really focused ball.”

“They played a great game,” said Malad coach Camie Tripp, whose team swept Aberdeen 3-0 Saturday. “We didn’t play badly.”

The West Side stat leaders were Mauri Wade (35 kills, 42 digs), Cierra Headworth (19 kills), Jaycee Robinson (nine blocks), and Lilia Ebanez (20 kills).

Malad’s Britlynn Hubbard had 21 kills in the loss to the Pirates, while Halli Hannah had 23 digs.

Malad (19-2) plays Soda Springs on Wednesday in a loser-out game at Malad. The winner plays West Side in the district title game and must beat the Pirates twice to win the crown.

Aberdeen followed up its loss to the Dragons with a season-ending loss to Bear Lake in a loser-out game. Bear Lake then lost to Soda Springs, ending its season.

GIRLS SOCCER

4A District 5-6 tournament

SKYLINE 2, PRESTON 1

Preston’s season ended Saturday in a winner-to-state game of the 4A District 5-6 tournament. The Indians were downed 2-1 by Skyline at home.

After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Preston tied the score thanks to Abigail Lyon’s goal in the 70th minute. The Grizzlies knocked in the game-winner in the waning minutes.

Preston started the season with five consecutive losses and finally strung multiple wins together early in the district tournament. The squad finished the season 8-11-1.

“We told them to be proud of what they did at the end,” Preston coach Brandon Lyon said. “With that start that we had, most teams would’ve not come back from that.”

SUGAR-SALEM 4, MALAD 1

Malad’s season ended Saturday with a 4-1 loss to Sugar-Salem in a 3A state play-in game at Pocatello’s Wilcox Elementary School. The Dragons were the No. 3 seed in the 3A District 5 tournament and upset top-seeded American Falls to earn a play-in appearance.

Malad finished the season 7-8.

BOYS SOCCER

TETON 2, MARSH VALLEY 1

Marsh Valley’s season ended Saturday with a 2-1 loss to Teton in a 3A state play-in game at Pocatello’s Wilcox Elementary School.

The Eagles lost four of their final six games, including a 2-1 loss to Snake River in the 3A District 5 championship match, to finish the season 7-8-3.
