Idaho high school state golf champions Payton Fehringer of Highland High and Andrew Cortez of American Falls High played in the Idaho Golf Association USGA Junior Qualifier tournaments Monday at TimberStone Golf Course in Caldwell.
Fehringer, the two-time 5A state champion, finished tied for fifth out of 26 golfers with a 3-over-par 75, narrowly missing alternate status. The top two golfers qualified for the USGA U.S. Girls’ Junior championship July 24-29 at Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta, Missouri, and the next two finishers qualified as alternates.
Fehringer was even through 17 holes but hit a triple bogey on the par-3 18th. She finished with three birdies, 11 pars, three bogeys and the triple bogey.
Cortez, the 2017 3A sate champion, was 17th out of 24 golfers with a 7-over-par 79. The winner plus two alternates qualified for the USGA U.S. Junior Amateur championship July 17-22 at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kansas.
Cortez hit two birdies, nine pars, five bogeys and two double bogeys.
Aberdeen’s Bo Knittel finished tied for 20th at 9-over 81. The 2017 2A state runner-up and 2016 state champion tallied three birdies, seven pars, four bogeys and four double bogeys.
The girls tournament was won by Amelia McKee of Spring, Texas, with a 4-under-par 68. The boys qualifier was claimed by Meridian’s Skyler Eubank with a 3-under 69.
