Canada's top diplomat says her country is embracing its growing prominence as a champion of “middle powers” at the U.N. General Assembly. Foreign Minister Anita Anand spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday as the international community’s biggest annual gathering got into gear. She says Canada sees its “middle power strategy” bearing fruit, and assembly’s big meeting could seed more growth. On Monday, Canada co-launched a new group of advocates for U.N.-style international cooperation. Canada’s presence on the international stage has shifted this year. It started with Prime Minister Mark Carney saying in January that countries like his own can't afford wishful thinking about the international system and need to act together.
