Idaho Fish and Game successfully transferred a young bull moose elsewhere after residents reported it wandering through Rexburg neighborhoods.
“Although Rexburg is a really nice place to live, we decided to take him on a road trip to show him some lower traffic areas to call home,” said the organization on Facebook.
It’s not unusual for moose to wander through Rexburg and especially so during the fall months as they look for food, Fish and Game has repeatedly stated.
“Moose move to lower elevations to avoid deep snowpack and take advantage of milder weather conditions,” it reported.
Fish and Game states that while moose aren’t aggressive, they are quite unpredictable and urged residents to be careful.
“A docile looking moose browsing on shrubs one minute can quickly charge or kick if it perceives a threat to itself or offspring. Mother cows with calves, in particular, require extra space and caution,” it said.
It added that moose arriving in populated areas are often “stressed,” and Fish and Game urges residents coming across them to give the animals plenty of room.
“Don’t provide food that might keep them in town longer,” it said. “Congregating moose in cities increases the risk of traffic accidents, property damage and may attract predators.”
Feeding a hungry moose often starts with good intentions but often results in great damage.
“A moose that has been fed may approach people, including children, expecting a handout,” it said. “This is an extremely dangerous situation, as a food-conditioned moose may become aggressive if it does not receive the treat it is expecting.”
Rexburg’s moose didn’t harm anyone or any buildings but was instead successfully transferred out of town.
