POCATELLO — A 25-year-old Chubbuck man could spend 30 years in prison after police say he killed a local woman Saturday evening while driving drunk at over 100 mph in a 3-ton pickup truck in downtown Pocatello.

Guy Garry Guerrero has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and aggravated driving under the influence following the fatal crash, according to Pocatello police and Bannock County court records the Idaho State Journal obtained Monday.

Guerrero was driving a 2022 Ford F-250 pickup south on North Arthur Avenue around 7 p.m. Saturday when he ran a red light at West Clark Street and struck a 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser traveling east through the intersection on a green light, court records show.

The driver of the PT Cruiser, Lena Marie Phelps, 29, of Pocatello, was critically injured in the crash and died at Portneuf Medical Center at 7:42 p.m., authorities said.

The 30-year-old passenger in Phelps’ vehicle suffered serious injuries, including a broken jaw, and was transported to the hospital for treatment, according to court records.

Officers arrived at the scene and detected a strong odor of alcohol on Guerrero’s breath, noting his speech was slurred and his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, police said.

Guerrero refused to complete field sobriety tests or provide breath samples, and police obtained a warrant to draw his blood for testing, court records show.

Traffic camera footage from the intersection showed Guerrero’s pickup traveling at a high rate of speed before running the red light and striking the PT Cruiser, police said. An off-duty police lieutenant who witnessed the crash estimated Guerrero was driving approximately 100 mph as he passed Pocatello High School moments before the collision.

The impact caused the PT Cruiser to roll multiple times before coming to rest in the parking lot of a nearby title and escrow business approximately 30 yards from the intersection, court records show.

Immediately following the collision, Guerrero’s pickup continued south before striking a city light pole and reader board approximately 15 yards from the point of impact, police said.

Guerrero, who suffered minor injuries, and his passenger were detained at the scene. Officers reported finding large amounts of cash hidden in bushes near the scene, according to court records.

Guerrero was arrested and transported to Bannock County Jail, where he remains incarcerated.

Pocatello police in a Sunday news release extended condolences to the family and loved ones affected by the incident.

“We recognize the profound impact this incident has on the victim’s family and on the community,” police stated. “The Pocatello Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving places everyone on the roadway at serious risk. Motorists are urged to drive sober, obey traffic signals, and report suspected impaired drivers to help keep our community safe.”

Police also said in court records that Guerrero’s vehicle was the same one officers had been attempting to locate for several consecutive nights prior to the crash and was suspected to have been involved in several shootings where occupants of the vehicle were seen shooting a firearm “in the bar district as well as a few hours before this call, on East Oak Street.”

He has not yet been charged in connection to any other incidents, according to court records.

Guerrero appeared before 6th District Magistrate Judge Aaron Thompson via video conference from the jail for an arraignment hearing Monday, where his bond was set at $500,000.

He is scheduled to appear in court again Jan. 7 for a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors will attempt to present sufficient evidence to elevate the case from magistrate to district court for trial.

Each of the vehicular manslaughter and aggravated driving under the influence charges Guerrero faces carries a maximum penalty of 15 years if he is convicted.
