POCATELLO — Idaho State Police and the Idaho Department of Transportation are urging motorists to slow down and remain attentive while traveling through area construction zones following two crashes at the same location on Interstate 15 in Pocatello about 12 hours apart.

Both crashes involved northbound I-15 motorists striking stationary Sundt Construction trucks equipped with rear collision-absorbing attenuators and caution lights near the Northgate Parkway off-ramp at Exit 73 while work was being done to replace water barricades following a previous accident, according to state police.

”Drivers are urged to slow down, pay attention and be prepared for diversions in work zones,” state police said.

The first collision involved a transit van smashing directly into the crash attenuator on the rear of a construction truck around 2 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a semitrailer colliding into a second construction truck around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, state police said.

The early morning collision caused heavy damage to the traffic control truck, tore open the trailer wall and spewed cargo onto the roadway, state police said, adding that the spilled cargo was a mixed load that included Amazon packages.

Due to damage and the condition of the load, the right northbound lane of I-15 and the Exit 73 off-ramp were closed for several hours Wednesday.

The driver of the transit van in the first collision was transported to Portneuf Medical Center via Pocatello Fire Department ground ambulance, where he was treated and released for minor injuries, while the semitrailer driver was not injured in the crash, state police said.

The water barriers and construction vehicles along that stretch of I-15 are in conjunction with projects to rebuild the Northgate I-15 on-ramp and widen the interstate, according to ITD spokesperson Justin Smith.

Sundt Construction will be closing the Northgate I-15 on-ramp from 7 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday to switch motorists to a new on-ramp configuration, according to ITD. A detour will be provided.

”We ask motorists to drive safely and to look out for construction signs and lane changes,” Smith said. “Slow down and give fellow motorists adequate space.”
