POCATELLO — The Michaud family is celebrating nearly two decades of spreading holiday cheer to people in need with their annual Christmas Angels concert this week.

Michaud matriarch Kathy Michaud said the concert is set for 7 p.m. Monday at the Calvary Alliance Church at 800 Marinus Lane in Pocatello. Monday’s concert will mark the 19th iteration.

“It is pretty unbelievable,” Michaud said. “We have hopes of a big 20, but we can’t even believe it’s been 19 years.”

The idea for the concert was born out of a family hardship when one of their five children was struggling with severe asthma and pneumonia. Michaud and her husband didn’t think they would be able to afford presents that year.

“Someone knocked on our apartment door,” Michaud said. “They doorbell ditched and left presents and food. It was magical. Our kids never forgot it.”

A few years later, Michaud’s children told her they wanted to give someone else that same feeling they had felt when they received all those presents.

“They decided this is what we’re going to do,” Michaud said. “All the kids are singers, so the natural thing was to have a concert.”

The Michauds worked with different neighborhoods, churches and other groups throughout the community to raise money and gather donations that would be distributed to people in need.

“People got names and put together presents and dropped them off at the door anonymously,” Michaud said. “It just took off from there.”

The Michaud family continues to come together to perform this concert. The children have grown up and have moved away, but they all come to visit for the concert.

“They have expanded,” Michaud said. “We have 12 grandkids. Quite a few of them participate as well.”

The best part about the concert is seeing everyone come together to make Christmas special for people in need. Some of those who come are people who received some of the donations in previous years.

“It’s neat to see it come full circle,” Michaud said. “They come with their kids and want to help someone else.”

Michaud said five years ago one of the families who came to the concert was the same family who helped her and her family all those years ago that inspired them to start the concert.

“We suspected it was them,” Michaud said. “They secretly told us later.”

Michaud also loves to see the generosity of people in the community. Even when people have a fixed budget, they still make an effort to find a way to help others have a good Christmas.

“They buy a gift for someone else in a time where the world seems less friendly,” Michaud said. “It’s awesome to see the generosity and kindness of others.”

People who attend the concert are asked to bring a monetary donation or an unwrapped toy. Michaud encouraged everyone to come, even if they can’t make a big donation.

“We want people to come and enjoy and know that there’s hope out there,” Michaud said. “We look forward to seeing everyone. We hope we can pack the place and have as many people as we can.”
