PROVIDENCE — Families and friends of two teenagers killed in a two-vehicle crash in Providence on Nov 22 are raising funds for their upcoming funeral services.

As of Dec. 1, fundraisers for the two teenagers killed and three other occupants of the car who were critically injured have collectively raised over $94,000.

Vil Matangi started a GoFundMe page for 17-year-old Laulea “CJ” Fiefia, who was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Nov. 22. Matangi, a close relative who watched the young man grow up, called Fiefia outgoing, playful and competitive.

“One thing I always loved about him is — because I know his family, I know the struggles that his family is constantly going through, but you would never know with him because he always seemed so happy,” Matangi said. “He carried his burdens quietly.”

According to the fundraiser page, Fiefia was one of three children of a single mother, and he worked to help support the family.

Matangi said losing Fiefia has been terrible, but it has brought their family together to support and comfort Fiefia’s mother.

He expressed gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the GoFundMe so the family can grieve without the burden of financial stress.

Fourteen-year-old Xylie Hutchinson died in the hospital from her injuries On Nov. 23. Her family announced her passing on social media, stating that she suffered a major head trauma that left her with no brain activity.

Hutchinson was one of three of the occupants vehicles who were ejected in the collision.

A GoFundMe started to help her family with funeral costs highlighted Hutchinson as a member of the Cache Valley Wild high school hockey team.

“Xylie was an incredible force on the ice with her hockey teams. She was a fierce defender of her teammates and an amazing friend off the ice,” stated the GoFundMe organizer. “She and her family have been a huge part in growing Northern Utah Hockey, and she will be missed beyond words.”

Members of the Cache Valley community honored Hutchinson following her death by placing hockey sticks on their porches.

Three other people involved in the crash were hospitalized in critical condition. They were identified in fundraisers as Thalia Linares, Braxton Miller and Kaycin Nielsen.

According to Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Davies Sanchez, all five of these individuals were traveling northbound on Highway 165 in a Toyota Corolla the night of Nov.22 when the driver lost control and swerved into oncoming traffic.

The Corolla hit a Toyota Sienna, causing the Corolla to roll over. The five occupants of the Sienna sustained minor injuries.

According to Sanchez, none of the occupants of the Corolla were wearing seatbelts.

Community members have created a memorial for those involved in the crash near the highway. On Nov. 24, the Cache County Sheriff’s Office announced it moved the memorial onto the nearby Blackstone property to provide a safer location for people to stop.
