POCATELLO — A 51-year-old local man died early Tuesday morning after colliding with a trailer that detached from a semitruck on U.S. Highway 30 near the Simplot Don plant just outside Pocatello city limits, authorities said.

Bannock County Coroner Torey Danner identified the man as Bradley Bassett of Pocatello in a Wednesday news release.

”My thoughts are with Bradley’s family and friends during this time of loss,” Danner said.

The wreck occurred around 3:55 a.m. Tuesday when Bassett’s Mercury Grand Marquis sedan struck the 2024 Freightliner’s trailer, authorities said.

The semi had been traveling eastbound on Highway 30 when the trailer detached and stopped in the westbound lanes, state police said.

Bassett, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, authorities said.

The wreck shut down Highway 30 for about six hours.

A 20-year-old Pocatello man was driving the semi with a 24-year-old Idaho Falls man as a passenger at the time of the crash, Idaho State Police said.

Neither the driver nor the passenger in the semi was injured in the crash, authorities said. Their names have not been released.

The wreck remains under investigation by state police.
