A Pocatello man has shattered the record for the largest rainbow ever caught in Idaho, and officials with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game are now checking records from throughout the country to determine if it’s a record for the lower 48 states.

    The trout that Mark Adams caught Monday in American Falls Reservoir weighed 34.74 pounds, breaking the previous state record by 14.72 pounds.

    The trout was measured at 41 and 1/8 inches long. Regional Fisheries Manager Dave Teuscher said three good water years in a row helped to make for large fish this season in the reservoir.

    “Carry-over water this year is perfect,” Teuscher said.

    Teuscher has taken an ear bone from the fish to test its age.
