POCATELLO — Police and fire officials are investigating a Sunday morning blaze that destroyed a detached garage on East Clark Street for possible arson, authorities said.

Pocatello Fire Department spokesperson Kim Stouse told the Idaho State Journal that fire investigators with both the Pocatello police and fire departments were called out to the scene of the blaze Sunday.

About 12 minutes after a passerby reported the detached garage near 1115 East Clark Street was on fire at 6:40 a.m. crews had it fully extinguished, but not before the structure suffered significant fire and smoke damage, Stouse said.

The person who reported the fire told dispatch that all people living in the nearby home had safely evacuated the premises.

Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the blaze and prevent it from spreading to any additional structures in an area of the neighborhood where residences and detached garages are located in close proximity to each other.

In addition to the garage being a total loss, a car parked nearby appears to have suffered substantial heat and smoke damage as well.

“Whenever you have a fire like that, there’s significant heat,” Stouse said. “And so even if the vehicle wasn’t in the structure, if it was close to it, it wouldn’t be uncommon for it to have some heat damage.”

The section of the 1100 block of East Clark Street was closed for a few hours while officials investigated the blaze and firefighters mopped up any lingering hot spots to ensure no reignition, Stouse said.

The initial report was not made by the homeowner. Their relationship to the occupants of the home is unknown, Stouse said, adding that the reporting party told dispatch the fire could be a potential arson incident.

Investigators from both the fire and police departments responded jointly to the scene.

“We had a fire investigator come out, and they had one as well — so we will work jointly together, because usually you’ll have two investigators on a fire,” Stouse said.

No injuries were reported.

While the cause has not yet been determined, Stouse said results are expected within the next few days.

“I would anticipate it would be a few days before we hear from investigators as to what they determined was the cause,” she said.

The home itself was not damaged, and no residents were displaced.

It was not immediately known whether the structure was covered by insurance.
