IONA — A four-vehicle crash northwest of Iona Monday left a 59-year-old Ririe woman dead and U.S. Highway 26 shut down for several hours.

It was the second fatal crash on Highway 26 in Eastern Idaho in less than a week. The victim in the earlier wreck was also a local woman.

Monday’s crash happened around 4:52 p.m. at the intersection of East 49th North and Highway 26. A 2019 Nissan NV200 van, driven by a 39-year-old man from Camarillo, California, was heading eastbound on East 49th North when it failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a 2017 Dodge Challenger driven by the Ririe woman, who was traveling eastbound on Highway 26, state police said.

The impact pushed the Dodge into the westbound lanes, where it collided with a 2017 Ford F250, driven by a 44-year-old Idaho Falls woman with two juvenile passengers, and a 2008 Ford Focus, driven by a 34-year-old Idaho Falls man, authorities said. Both vehicles were headed westbound on Highway 26.

The Dodge’s driver was taken by ground ambulance to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The Bonneville County Coroner’s Office identified her Tuesday as Simone Stoumbaugh, 59, of Ririe. The F250’s driver was also taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance. Her condition hasn’t been released.

The crash shut down Highway 26 for about five hours.

Everyone in the Nissan, Dodge and Ford Focus was wearing a seat belt, as was the F250’s driver, according to state police. It’s unknown whether the F250’s two juvenile passengers were buckled in, authorities said.

Idaho State Police were assisted by the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office and Idaho Falls Fire Department at the scene.

Monday’s crash comes less than a week after an earlier wreck on Highway 26 killed another local woman. Jenefer Mitchell, 44, died Saturday, June 20, when her westbound 2017 Honda Accord attempted a left turn south of Ririe and was struck by a 2007 Toyota Tundra pickup, state police said.

The man and three juveniles in the Toyota were taken to a hospital; their names and conditions have not been released. Highway 26 was partially blocked for about three hours following that crash, which remains under investigation by Idaho State Police and the Bonneville County Coroner’s Office.

The crash near Iona also remains under investigation by Idaho State Police.
