An invitation to a homecoming dance from a teenage boy to a teenage girl quickly turned into a disaster after the boy and eight of his friends found themselves facing down the barrel of a gun.

The girl’s 55-year-old neighbor Daniel W. Johnson is alleged to have threatened the boys with a firearm.

Around midnight on Saturday, Fremont County sheriff’s deputies, St. Anthony police and Madison County sheriff’s deputies surrounded Johnson’s Teton home and ordered him out of the house where deputies handcuffed Johnson and took him to the Fremont County Jail.

At the jail, Johnson was charged with four counts of felony assault and one count of kidnapping.

It all started as eight teenage boys helped their friend ask the girl to the dance. Two carloads of boys parked across from the girl’s home where they left the invitation on the doorstep of the house. Shortly after, Johnson, 55, allegedly held them at gunpoint.

“Nine juvenile males had dropped something at a residence in Teton when they were confronted by an adult male,” stated police reports. “Reportedly the man was armed with a firearm and threatened them with a firearm.”

The boys then ran back to their cars to drive away. When the driver of one of the cars noticed the other vehicle wasn’t following, he drove back to see what was going on.

According to the report, Johnson allegedly ordered the boys in the car left behind to get out of the vehicle. Once outside the car, one boy immediately put his hands in the air while Johnson leveled a verbal barrage of profanities at him, the youth told police.

“(You) want to die,” Johnson purportedly yelled. “You don’t know who you’re messing with.”

Johnson then allegedly put the gun on the boy’s chest.

“He wouldn’t let me through,” said the boy. “He grabbed my right hand and twisted it. With his other hand, he was holding a gun towards me. At one point he did press the gun to my chest.”

Johnson then purportedly pointed the gun toward the rest of the boys.

Police wrote that the boy tried telling Johnson they had left an invitation to the dance, but instead Johnson allegedly continued twisting the boy’s right hand behind his back.

In the meantime, one of the boy’s friends shot video of the incident that later showed police Johnson’s alleged actions.

St. Anthony police and Madison County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene. The officers surrounded Johnson’s home and ordered him to surrender with his hands up.

The order was given twice before a woman, another man and Johnson came out of the residence.

“The suspect acted erratic, unpredictable and was possibly intoxicated,” reported police. “(He) began making utterances about knowing why we were there.”

Johnson told police he saw the boys “ram” the girl’s front door, and said he “‘didn’t know it was a bunch of damn kids until he was on top of them.” Johnson then ordered the youths to stay out of the neighborhood.

Johnson admitted to twisting the boy’s wrists and putting a gun on the boy’s chest, police said.

In the meantime, the girl’s mother witnessed the event. She reported hearing a loud bang and saw the gun, said police.

Another neighbor told police that Johnson often kept an eye on homes in the neighborhood.

Following his arrest, a “surety bond” for $40,000 was placed allowing Johnson to leave the jail. He was warned not to drink any alcohol, nor to visit any bars and to get written permission before venturing to Jackson Hole for work.

For each of the felony assault counts, Johnson faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. For the attempted kidnapping charge, he could be sentenced to up to 25 years in prison and be fined $50,000.
