IDAHO FALLS — A man was shot multiple times by police during a shootout in an Idaho Falls hotel room, authorities said.

The man, whose name hasn’t been released, remains at a local hospital, where he was transported by ambulance after Monday’s hotel room shootout with officers, police said.

No police officers were wounded by the gunfire during the incident, which began as an attempt by employees at Econo Lodge on Broadway Avenue to evict the man for staying past his checkout time. It ended with an exchange of gunfire, the hotel being evacuated and the Idaho Falls Police Department SWAT team being deployed.

Idaho Falls police issued a lengthy and detailed news release on Tuesday describing the incident from start to finish.

The incident began to unfold around 1:15 p.m. Monday when staff at the Econo Lodge called police asking for officers to assist in evicting the man because he was in his room past checkout and wouldn’t leave, police said.

Because of a large volume of high priority calls at the time, Idaho Falls police did not respond to the Econo Lodge until around 3 p.m. Monday.

Police initially believed the man was with a woman in the hotel room and because of previous experience with him, six police officers were dispatched to the hotel and a bullet-proof ballistic shield was deployed for the officers’ protection, police said.

“Officers knocked on the door of the (hotel) room, announced that they were Idaho Falls police officers and called to the two people by name,” police said in their news release. “Officers stated that the two people did not have any warrants and were not under arrest, but they needed to leave the hotel. Officers yelled into the room several times with no response. Officers used a key card provided by hotel staff to open the door, then kicked the door to break the chain lock. Officers again tried to communicate with the two people believed to be in the room with no response.”

The room’s bathroom door was shut and police believed the man and woman were inside, so they again called out the names of the man and woman and told them to leave the hotel, police said.

“Officers moved to force the bathroom door open,” the police news release stated. “An Idaho Falls police K9 officer was present with his K9 and yelled warnings that if the people did not come out a K9 would be sent in and they would get bit.”

A gunshot was then fired from inside the bathroom, causing the police in the hotel room to take cover, authorities said.

“Three Idaho Falls police officers were trapped inside the hotel room, unable to get safely past the bathroom and into the hallway,” the police news release stated. “One of the three officers had the ballistic shield. As the three officers moved together to get behind the shield, the man reached out of the bathroom door with a gun in his hands and fired at officers. An Idaho Falls police officer inside the room fired his service weapon back at the man. A second Idaho Falls police officer in the hallway also fired.”

During the shooting, the police K9 accidentally bit one of the officers, who required medical attention afterward but will recover, police said.

Police said they believe the man had been wounded by their gunfire but they could still hear him moving around in the bathroom. The officers ordered the man to surrender but there was no response.

At this point police decided to evacuate the hotel and call in the SWAT team. Bonneville County sheriff’s deputies and the Idaho Falls Fire Department also responded.

The three officers who were trapped in the hotel room were safely evacuated through the hotel room window while the SWAT team tried to communicate with the man but got no response. The SWAT team then used a flash-bang device to enter the bathroom and take the man into custody, police said.

The SWAT officers also reportedly recovered a handgun from the bathroom.

After the man was in police custody, Idaho Falls Fire Department paramedics began treating him for his gunshot wounds before transporting him to a local hospital.

Police said they determined that the woman who had been with the man had left the hotel prior to the arrival of the officers. Her name hasn’t been released.

The entire incident will be investigated by the East Idaho Critical Incident Task Force, led by Idaho State Police, to determine if the two officers who fired their weapons acted correctly. The Bonneville County Prosecutor’s Office will have final say on whether the officers’ actions were justified.

“Five of the six Idaho Falls police officers on scene, including the two who discharged their service weapons, had their body cameras activated and recording during the incident,” Idaho Falls police said in their news release. “One officer’s camera battery had died shortly before arriving on scene, but their actions were captured on activated cameras. This body camera footage has been provided to the (East Idaho Critical Incident Task Force) and will be released to the public as the investigation proceeds.”

Idaho Falls police said the two officers who fired their weapons during the incident have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard policy following officer-involved shootings.

“The officers’ names are expected to be released after they have been interviewed by the (East Idaho Critical Incident Task Force) and other necessary interviews have been completed,” Idaho Falls police stated in their news release. “The name of the suspect is expected to be released at the same time.”
