The Preston Rotary Club has been named the Adopt a Highway group of the year for 2025 by the Idaho Transportation Department.

The club was recognized during the Idaho Transportation Board's monthly meeting in Pocatello, according to a news release from ITD. The Preston Rotary Club has participated in the Adopt a Highway program since 2001.

The Adopt a Highway program allows volunteer groups to adopt a specific section of highway to keep it clean. Most stretches are about 2 miles long, and participating groups are asked to conduct roadside cleanups throughout the year.

Anita Swanson, Preston Rotary Club treasurer, said at the meeting that the club's involvement with the program is an extension of its mission of service above self. The club is committed to creating a safer, more welcoming environment for residents and visitors.

The group conducts roadside cleanups twice a year and members have noticed patterns in the items they collect.

"Beer of choice tends to be Budweiser and Coors," ITD board member John Bulger said in the news release. "When it comes to volume, Marlboro cigarette packs usually take first place, followed by Camel, with chew cans close behind — Copenhagen seems to be the preferred brand there."

Rotary Club members look forward to participating in the Adopt a Highway program. Many bring friends and family to the cleanups, helping expand ITD's reach.

ITD estimates the program saves $750,000 per year — totaling $35 million over its 35-year history. Those savings are redirected toward highway construction and maintenance.

Adopt a Highway groups have removed a total of 5.5 million pounds of trash and debris from Idaho highways.

More than 1,000 groups are currently participating in the Adopt a Highway program. More than half of Idaho's highways have been adopted, but opportunities remain for other groups to get involved.
