Crews will close the Upper Mesa Falls area beginning Aug. 10 to conduct renovations to the popular recreation area, officials with the Caribou-Targhee National Forest announced.

Located on the Henrys Fork of the Snake River outside the eastern Idaho town of Ashton, Upper Mesa Falls is a 114-foot waterfall.

The closure is expected to continue into winter to allow crews to complete the projects, which include road repair and chip sealing.

“The timeline was chosen to minimize the impact to the public while still offering environmental conditions needed for success of the project,” Forest Engineer Steve Jenkins said in a written statement. “We want to get the word out early so visitors aren’t surprised at the end of summer.”

Upper Mesa Falls and nearby Lower Mesa Falls are considered the last major undammed waterfalls on the broader Columbia River system.

During the closure, the public will still be able to explore Lower Mesa Falls, as well as hiking trails and other scenic overlooks located along the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway, officials said.
