The AL West-leading Texas Rangers have put versatile right-hander Cal Quantrill on the 15-day injured list because of right lat tightness. The move came a day after Quantrill faced only four batters and threw 12 pitches in a start against Toronto. Hard-throwing right-hander Winston Santos was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock and joined the Rangers before the finale of their three-game series against Toronto. About an hour before the game, the Rangers said right fielder Brandon Nimmo was being scratched from the starting lineup because of illness.
The Baltimore Orioles activated reliever Félix Bautista from the 60-day injured list, setting up the former closer to return from right shoulder surgery 14 months after his last major league game. Bautista saved 33 games and struck out 110 in 61 innings while earning an All-Star nod in 2023, but he missed the final month of that season and all of 2024 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He had 19 saves in 35 games in 2025 before surgery to repair his torn labrum and torn rotator cuff ended his season. In addition, Trey Mancini signed a one-day contract to retire with the Orioles, the franchise he played for during the bulk of his eight-year career.
Josue De Paula's first week with the Los Angeles Dodgers has been impressive. Batting ninth as the designated hitter, he went 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI in his Dodger Stadium debut Friday night, an 8-2 win over the San Francisco Giants. De Paula debuted in the major leagues last Friday in Miami. In eight games, he has five hits, including a home run, five RBIs and four runs. He’s drawn eight walks and struck out just twice. Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts praised his poise, noting De Paula isn't overwhelmed by the big leagues after being the first player called up directly from Double-A during Andrew Friedman's 12-year tenure as Dodgers president of baseball operations.
The Baltimore Orioles have placed second baseman Jackson Holliday on the 10-day injured list with to left wrist inflammation. The move was retroactive to Tuesday. It was announced shortly before the Orioles beat the New York Mets 7-1. Orioles manager Craig Albernaz didn’t rule out the possibility that Holliday could return for the final weekend of the season. Albernaz says Holliday will undergo imaging when the club returns to Baltimore. The Orioles will host the Milwaukee Brewers starting Friday. The 22-year-old Holliday is batting .229 with seven homers, 30 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 98 games this season.
Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Tanner Banks has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list. Banks landed on the injured list on July 9 with a left forearm strain. The 34-year-old Banks is 0-4 with a 7.14 ERA in 28 games. He has allowed 23 earned runs in 29 innings. Right-hander Grant Holman was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley a day after allowing five unearned runs while recording one out in his major league debut in Saturday’s 12-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Infielder Christian Cairo was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Banks.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed Esmerlyn Valdez on the injured list with a left hamstring strain, likely signaling the end of the 22-year-old outfielder’s rookie season. The Pirates recalled outfielder Ronny Simón from Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move. Valdez is batting .235 with 17 homers and 47 RBIs in 71 games. He made major league debut on May 22 at Toronto. Valdez left Friday’s 12-2 loss to the Cubs after injuring himself while running to first base on a grounder in the sixth inning. He grabbed the back of his left leg and limped off the field with his arms draped around the shoulders of training staff.
Former Giants pitcher Robbie Ray threw five innings for his 100th career victory and the San Diego Padres extended their winning streak to five games with a 7-5 decision over San Francisco on Friday night. Mason Miller struck out Bryce Eldridge looking with the bases loaded to end the game. Miller earned his 35th save as San Diego maintained a half-game lead over Arizona for the final NL wild-card spot. San Francisco dealt the 34-year-old Ray (12-8) to San Diego for two minor leaguers at the trade deadline Aug. 3. On Friday, the left-hander gave up five runs on four hits in five innings. He struck out five and walked four and improved to 100-89 in his 13-season career.
The Pittsburgh Pirates activated infielder/outfielder Ryan O’Hearn from the 10-day injured list before Friday’s 12-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs and optioned outfielder Ronny Simón to Triple-A Indianapolis. O’Hearn suffered a strained left quad on July 31 at Cincinnati while running to first on a groundout in an 8-7 Pirates loss. He had been expected to miss six to eight weeks. The 33-year-old O’Hearn is batting .270 with 17 home runs and a career-high 69 RBIs in 96 games. He wasn’t in Pittsburgh’s starting lineup Friday but pinch hit in the seventh inning Friday and went 0 for 2 on a pair of flyouts.
Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson could be back in the team’s lineup in a week, manager Craig Counsell said before Friday’s game with Pittsburgh.Swanson, a smooth-fielding two-time All-Star, went on the injured list on Monday, Aug. 17 with a a left oblique strain he suffered taking an awkward swing during a loss to St. Louis on the previous day. Swanson had been expected to miss four weeks.Counsell said Swanson’s rehab has been progressing smoothly and that the 32-year-old infielder would continue working with the Cubs at Wrigley Field during their weekend series against the Pirates.Barring a setback, Swanson would join Triple-A Iowa for rehab games on Tuesday and Wednesday, and “(we) then hope to have him active Friday (Sept. 18) in Cincinnati,” Counsell said.
Anthony Volpe’s first night back in the majors was one to remember. Suddenly a fan favorite in New York again, Volpe smacked a grand slam and drove in a career-high five runs during his rousing return from Triple-A as the Yankees beat the Colorado Rockies 10-3 on Thursday. The much-maligned Volpe is getting another chance with the Yankees — this time at a new position — and he’s off to a terrific start. With the Bronx crowd chanting his name on several occasions, Volpe had three hits and a stolen base in his first big league game since Aug. 1.
