Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. left Atlanta’s game against Cincinnati in the third inning after fouling a ball off his left leg. X-rays and a CT scan were negative and Acuña was listed as day-to-day with a contusion. The slugger was able to walk off the field after hobbling away from the battling circle and dropping to his knees in clear pain. The injury comes with the playoffs just a week away for NL East-winning Atlanta. Acuña has been one of the team's hottest hitters down the stretch, giving him 20 homers and 20 stolen bases for the season.
Mets first baseman Jared Young was carted off the field in the sixth inning of a 3-0 loss to Philadelphia after he was knocked out when struck on the head by a knee of pitcher Nolan McLean as the two converged on Justin Crawford’s slow grounder. New York manager Andy Green said a CT scan at a hospital was negative and Young had concussion symptoms and full use of his extremities. With the Phillies ahead 1-0, McLean broke to first on contact and Young initially moved back toward the bag. McLean briefly paused, at which point Young reached for the ball with his right hand as he tried to keep a foot on the base.
The Philadelphia Phillies have placed All-Star left-hander Jesús Luzardo on the 15-day injured list, three days after he was scratched from a start at Atlanta because of left shoulder inflammation. Tuesday's move is retroactive to Saturday. Luzardo is eligible to return Sept. 27, the final day of the regular season. Luzardo had an MRI on Saturday that showed no serious issues, then did not throw Sunday or Monday. Interim manager Don Mattingly said the Phillies’ medical personnel believed Luzardo was better Tuesday but not as far along as they would like. Mattingly says he expects Luzardo to be available in the playoffs, provided the Phillies get there.
Minnesota Twins shortstop Kaelen Culpepper left Saturday’s game against Cleveland after being hit by a pitch. A 95 mph fastball from Franco Aleman struck him in the upper back. Culpepper was on the ground in pain and was tended to by trainers. He attempted to walk to first base but stopped halfway and was removed from the game. X-rays were negative, and the team says he has a right shoulder contusion. Culpepper is considered day to day. He is hitting .286 in 30 games since making his major league debut on August 7.
A.J. Brown has a high-ankle sprain and will miss several games, a person with knowledge of his injury told The Associated Press on Thursday night. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because the Patriots haven’t announced the severity of Brown’s injury, said an MRI confirmed the injury. Brown could miss anywhere from three to six games, depending on the way his ankle responds to treatment. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel only said that Brown will undergo more testing following the right ankle injury in the second half of New England’s season-opening 13-10 loss at Seattle.
The Toronto Blue Jays have placed pitcher Jameson Taillon on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation, a day after his abbreviated return from the IL. The 34-year-old starter was pulled after two innings against the Kansas City Royals and sent for an MRI. The team is seeking a second opinion on the imaging, and manager John Schneider says the Blue Jays haven’t ruled out Taillon for the season. Taillon was making his first appearance since Aug. 10, when he went on the IL with right forearm tendinitis. The right-hander allowed one run and two hits in two innings before leaving.
