Green Bay's Lukas Van Ness clears concussion protocol. Packers rule out Javon Hargrave for Jets game
Green Bay edge rusher Lukas Van Ness has cleared concussion protocol in advance of the Packers' Sunday afternoon game with the New York Jets. The Packers have ruled out defensive tackle Javon Hargrave for Sunday's game. The Packers updated their injury report Saturday after listing Van Ness as questionable and Hargrave as doubtful a day earlier. Hargrave and Van Ness were both in concussion protocol. Hargrave also has been dealing with a knee issue.
Carson Wentz will start at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday with Kyler Murray still in the concussion protocol and ruled out of the game at Chicago. Murray was a limited participant in practice all week and ran out of time to make more more progress after taking an illegal hit to the head in the season opener. His injury came in the first quarter of his debut for Minnesota. Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said he expects Murray to clear the protocol early next week and be able to play again on Sept. 27 at Tampa Bay.
The Miami Dolphins ruled out edge rusher Chop Robinson ahead of their Week 2 matchup at San Francisco because of a concussion. Coach Jeff Hafley told reporters Friday at the team’s training site in Napa, California, that Robinson sustained the concussion at practice this week. He was held out of practice Thursday. Robinson’s absence Sunday could hurt a Dolphins’ defense that struggled to stop the run and generate pressure against quarterback Kirk Cousins in their Week 1 loss to the Raiders. Cousins completed 21 of 30 passes for 160 yards and three touchdowns, and running back Ashton Jeanty rushed for 102 yards on 23 attempts.
Mets first baseman Jared Young was carted off the field in the sixth inning of a 3-0 loss to Philadelphia after he was knocked out when struck on the head by a knee of pitcher Nolan McLean as the two converged on Justin Crawford’s slow grounder. New York manager Andy Green said a CT scan at a hospital was negative and Young had concussion symptoms and full use of his extremities. With the Phillies ahead 1-0, McLean broke to first on contact and Young initially moved back toward the bag. McLean briefly paused, at which point Young reached for the ball with his right hand as he tried to keep a foot on the base.
Kyler Murray was well enough to join the Minnesota Vikings for practice on a limited basis to leave open the possibility he could progress through the NFL concussion protocol to play this week at Chicago. The Vikings will be without leading rusher Jordan Mason for at least four weeks with a broken thumb he suffered in the season opener. Murray left that game against Green Bay after an illegal hit to the head at the end of a run. The Vikings prefer to decide their quarterback by Friday. Carson Wentz would play if Murray is not medically cleared in time.

Murray arrived on Monday at Vikings headquarters “feeling pretty good,” according to coach Kevin O’Connell. It was too soon for the team to assess his chance of playing the next game at Chicago. Murray's debut lasted 11 plays. He was hit on the right side of his helmet by Green Bay safety Javon Bullard's lowered shoulder.
Carson Wentz came in after Kyler Murray’s first-quarter concussion in his Minnesota debut and helped the Vikings in a spirited comeback to beat the Green Bay Packers. The Vikings took their first lead with 6:37 left while scoring 29 straight points to close a 39-22 season-opening victory. Wentz hit Justin Jefferson for two scores and a 2-point conversion that put the Vikings up 25-22 after the Packers extended the drive three times with crushing defensive penalties. Jordan Love had a brilliant afternoon spoiled by two late turnovers deep in his own territory.

Carson Wentz took over for Murray.
The Australian Broadcasting Corp. says a study has found that 31 rugby league players have been diagnosed with the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). It said rugby league players in their 20s, 30s and 40s were found to have had the degenerative brain disease, which can only be diagnosed after death. CTE has also been found in former NFL players and those who play rugby union and other contact sports. The ABC reported the Australian Sports Brain Bank findings that of the 51 rugby league players’ brains donated, 31 were found to have CTE.
Tennessee linebacker Cedric Gray sustained a concussion and minor injuries in a UTV accident over the weekend that puts his availability for the Titans’ season opener Sunday with the New York Jets in question. The Titans said in a statement Monday they look forward to Gray returning when he clears the NFL's concussion protocol. A person familiar with details of the crash in Tennessee told The Associated Press that neither alcohol nor reckless driving were involved. Gray led the Titans with 160 tackles last season to rank fifth in the NFL.
