POCATELLO — Nick Hottman picked up his brush Monday at Marshall Public Library, kicking off a new mural that will highlight local landmarks and celebrate the library’s role in the community.

The project is made possible through support from the Friends of the Marshall Public Library. Patrons are welcome to stop by and watch Hottman work throughout the week as the mural takes shape.

The library commission is the latest in a stretch of several pieces Hottman has completed in the Gate City. Hottman has become one of Pocatello’s most recognizable public artists.

Earlier this year, he was commissioned by Union Pacific to paint a mural inside the historic train depot at 275 S. Harrison Ave. The piece is densely layered with the city’s World War II history, featuring a period-accurate Union Pacific engineer, a locomotive modeled on the Ross Park display and imagery tied to Pocatello’s wartime role as both an industrial site and a military hub.

Last summer, Hottman was hired by the city to paint a cartoonish, graffiti-style mural on the Idaho-shaped feature at the new Optimist Skate Park, which opened in July. The design incorporated the Southeast Idaho Skate Park Association’s logo at the request of Pocatello Parks and Recreation Director Anne Butler, who said the finished product “turned out perfect.”

Around the same time, Hottman completed a large multi-colored mural at Dude’s Public Market in Historic Downtown Pocatello, incorporating space for the logos of each of the market’s tenants to mark a wave of new additions to the food hall.

Hottman also recently painted a mural at the Pocatello Animal Services building located at 3100 Avenue of the Chiefs. He previously painted a mural inside the Marshall Public Library’s STEM center, making Monday’s project something of a return engagement at the building on 113 S. Garfield Ave.

Community members are also encouraged to take part in the library’s upcoming Tiny Art Show. Art kits can be picked up starting Monday while supplies last and are available through May 8. Completed pieces can be returned to the library and will be displayed as part of the show.
