Defensive lineman Jack Pyburn was waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday and could be the latest player who tries to go back to college after spending time in an NFL camp. Pyburn was waived as NFL teams reduced their rosters to 53 and now could try to get a fifth year of eligibility. Pyburn was among the players granted a temporary restraining order by a Louisiana court earlier this month that would make them eligible to return to college athletics. Four other players who spent time on NFL rosters this offseason before being cut were also part of the case.

The Big 12 Conference on Wednesday followed the Southeastern and Big Ten conferences in banning players who were on NFL rosters from returning to college. The decision by the Big 12 came a day after rulings by the SEC and Big Ten. Earlier Wednesday, the NFL made it clear that players who leave the NFL to return to college won’t be allowed to come back to the league this season. NFL executive Troy Vincent reiterated the longstanding policy at the league’s meetings Wednesday. Atlantic Coast Conference leaders were also discussing the topic this week.
