The next time you blink, the Best Stops throughout Cache Valley will all be Maveriks.

Well, it won’t happen that quickly, but Maverik plans to remodel the stores — three in Utah and one in Idaho — “immediately” after the company purchases them Oct. 1, according to a company statement released Monday.

Aaron Simpson, the Salt Lake City-based company’s vice president of marketing, said the Best Stops will all be Maveriks by November or December.

“First, we want to thank Dave Bessinger. He’s done a great job, I think, of being part of the community,” said Simpson, referring to Best Stop’s owner and founder. “I think it’s going to make for a great transition. We can kind of keep his legacy alive.”

The Best Stop locations to be purchased by Maverik are located at 790 E. 1400 N. in Logan, Utah; 2495 N. Main St. in North Logan; 303 S. Main St. in Logan; and 150 W. Legacy Drive in Franklin, Idaho. Simpson said each of those Best Stops will cease current operations not too long after Oct. 1.

Bessinger said he informed his employees — 50 in all — about the decision Friday, ahead of the news release.

“I’m sad to let them go, but I don’t have the energy to keep it up, and my family has more interest in other courses in their life,” said Bessinger, who founded Best Stop in the mid-1980s.

He said he is happy Maverik is the company that will be purchasing his stores, even though they were longtime competitors.

“I would say, ‘Heck, everyone ought to just go in and try it,’ and I bet they’ll be happy with Maverik and probably stay with them,’” Bessinger said. “Maverik wants to be a good partner with the community, and they’re really leaning over backwards to show that.”

Bessinger is also grateful his employees will have the chance to get jobs at Maverik.

“That is the best part,” he said.

Simpson said Maverik’s desire to purchase the Best Stops came not only from Bessinger’s decision to sell them, but the fact that the businesses are both family owned and that Maverik has a hefty presence in Cache Valley already.

Asked about the idea of having a Maverik across the street from another one on 300 South in Logan, Simpson said it’s an “experiment” the company has tried before down in Sandy.

“It’s been very successful for us,” said Simpson, referring to the two Sandy locations. “Main Street in Logan, again, very busy street. So having them across the street just makes it easy whichever direction you’re going to.”

Simpson said the company does think about the number of Maveriks in any given location.

“We’re not there yet in Cache Valley, so we think this is a good opportunity for us,” he said.
