NORTH LOGAN, Utah — Driven by his passion for the outdoors, accessibility and sustainability, Carson Field has opened Naomi Market, a new outdoor gear and apparel consignment store in North Utah.

Twenty-two-year-old Field only started putting his idea into action in August last year, and things have proceeded in quick succession, he said.

“The community seems stoked,” he said. “As long as we keep getting the word out and getting people excited, I think it will go well.”

Field grew up in the Cache Valley, adventuring in the woods and the canyons, he said. He also grew up thrifting with his family and his mom taught him how to sew and make alterations.

His eye for good used gear has been instilled in him, he said.

“The inspiration was the lack of easily accessible gear and the lack of alternatives for gear, that is what I have noticed,” Field said.

Naomi Market is named for the Mount Naomi Wilderness where Field has spent time exploring.

“It is basically our backyard,” he said.

Field answered additional questions for The Herald Journal.

What drives you to do this?

It goes back to when I was growing up. The outdoors should be accessible to everyone, and the thing stopping them from getting out into the outdoors shouldn’t be big, commercial stores selling expensive gear.

There is so much that people have around in the valley. As long as we can connect people’s gear with a new loving home that is the way it should be.

Providing the outlet for that is really all that it was. Wanting to make sure everyone could get the gear they wanted at a reasonable price. Not having to sell their house for it.

That is where it stemmed from, accessibility in the outdoors for everyone.

What has been the most challenging part of getting to this point?

Probably not knowing anything about business. It has all been just a big learning process, which has been really good and rewarding.

There are a lot of things you don’t necessarily think about that you have to figure out and just do.

A hard part is finding a space. That is why we are out of a house right now. You have to start somewhere.

It came to a crossroads for me where I had to wait for the perfect space or do, I just get it started and grow from there. I don’t want to deal with waiting anymore. I just wanted to get open and get it out to the public.

If this is something the public likes and the community needs, we will be able to grow from there. Let’s just use what we got and go from there.

It is just a time thing more than anything, learning as you go and perfecting it along the way.

What are you looking forward to in this new endeavor?

I have a lot of big ideas I am excited about. Down the road, as soon as we can have this consistent and running as far as the consignment gear and apparel is concerned, I really am looking forward to getting other things up and running, like repairs and rentals.

Focused on soft good repairs, whether that be tears in tents or in clothes or zipper repairs, buttons, whatever it is — things people don’t want to deal with or don’t have the expertise to deal with. They can bring it here and we will have the expertise and the team to take care of it not only quickly but at a cost-effective price.

That is something a lot of people would benefit from but there is not really an outlet for. To be able to provide that would be awesome.

There is no lack of good rentals in the valley but chipping into that as well and doing especially backcountry gear and ‘avy’ (avalanche) packs and climbing gear. There is no lack of people who take an interest in climbing so that could always be something that is needed.

Those are things I have played around with the idea of, and I am really excited by the prospect of being able to develop those once I have this at a steady, consistent level.

The vision for the whole thing is to be the local, mom-and-pop shop that everyone knows and trusts in the valley. You can always trust you are going to get a good deal; you won’t get ripped off, you know they will have the knowledge if you are headed into the canyon and need something. You can stop in and chat, and we will be able to help you out.

Up to this point it has been pretty much commercial outdoor stores here. It would be nice to have a change in such a tight-knit community that Cache Valley is to have something like that.

What do you hope to bring to and improve in the community?

Initially just growing the accessibility of the outdoors here in the community and hopefully keep stoking that flame, keeping the excitement up for what is next in the valley and helping it to become a hotspot for people to be excited about coming to and enjoying their stays.
