Madison County Deputies and the Rexburg Police Department joined forces Friday night to contain a “reckless e-bike incident” near the Cove Apartments.
“Several riders fled upon law enforcement arrival with two fleeing onto the BYU-Idaho campus where pursuit was discontinued for safety reasons,” reported the Madison County Sheriff’s Department on its Facebook page.
The suspects involved were juveniles, and, as a result, will not been identified.
According to Madison County Sheriff Ron Ball, residents at the Cove had complained about someone throwing items off the top of the apartment buildings. Juveniles were identified as having been involved and took off on their e-bikes at high rates of speed.
“They were trying to elude the officers,” he said. “They were driving up on sidewalks and driving in a reckless manner on e-bikes.”
The officers stopped chasing after the children citing safety concerns. Later that evening, police were investigating another case at the Brigham Young University-Idaho campus when they came across the children accused of throwing things from the top of the Cove Apartments.
“They were following up on a previous complaint they had on other kids when they located the e-bikes and the juveniles from the (apartment) incident. Parents were called, and it’s being referred to Madison prosecutors office for juvenile petition.”
No one was injured during the incident, and there were no reports of any property damage.
