Mitchell Chesnut Murray and Carrie Marie Murray were each sentenced Friday morning to two consecutive prison terms of one to 15 years for their roles in the March 2025 death of their 18-month-old daughter.
Both pleaded guilty on July 2, to one count of second-degree felony child abuse homicide and one count of second-degree felony aggravated child abuse committed intentionally or knowingly. Each received credit for 283 days already served.
Judge Spencer D. Walsh imposed the maximum sentence allowed under the plea agreement for both defendants, concluding that the seriousness and duration of the neglect outweighed their lack of criminal histories and potential for rehabilitation.
“It’s appalling,” Walsh told Mitchell Murray. “It’s shocking the type of neglect that you demonstrated here.”
Arrests
The Murrays were arrested by the Cache County Sheriff’s Office in December 2025. CCSO announced the arrests of both individuals in a statement alleging a “severe pattern of neglect,” regarding the Murrays’ treatment of their daughter.
