AMERICAN FALLS — The American Falls School Board recognized Idaho State Superintendent of Public Instruction Debbie Critchfield for her role in helping secure continued funding for Idaho's Community Schools program.
The board honored Critchfield with a Resolution of Appreciation and Thanks at its Jan. 26 meeting, according to a news release from the American Falls School District.
The resolution highlights Critchfield's advocacy during an appeal process with the U.S. Department of Education after federal officials moved to end Community Schools funding mid-grant. For American Falls, the five-year grant represents an investment of approximately $2 million, supporting Community School coordinators at each school and expanding programs and services for students and families.
School Board Chairman Cameron Koopman said the board wanted to formally recognize the efforts that helped protect the program locally. He noted that losing the funding early would have disrupted services and staffing across the district.
Koopman said Critchfield's work helped prevent that disruption and ensured American Falls could continue supporting students and families through the Community Schools model.
The resolution was delivered to Critchfield on Feb. 2 at the Idaho State Capitol by Kim Jackman, Hillcrest Elementary School's Community School coordinator, representing the American Falls School District.
Jackman said the stability of continued funding allows the district to keep key supports in place and maintain strong partnerships with community organizations. She added that consistency matters in Community Schools work because it is built on relationships and ongoing connections with families.
Jackman also emphasized that steady funding helps schools avoid losing momentum. She said it allows programs already in place to continue growing and adjusting to student needs, rather than being abruptly dismantled.
District officials said the board hopes the resolution serves as both a thank-you and a reminder of how important Community Schools funding is to the work happening in American Falls and across Idaho.
