Born and raised in Mississippi, Stuart got his start in bluegrass legend Lester Flatts’ band, and by 21 years old, he was working with Johnny Cash, ultimately becoming a star in his own right. It’s a free movie night at the Bengal Theater in the Pond Student Union this Thursday at 7 p.m. with “The Secret of My Success” starring Michael J. Fox in the classic tale about a talented young man who can’t get an executive position without rising through the ranks, so he comes up with a shortcut, which gives him an opportunity, but also creates a world of trouble. All are welcome to attend. The movie is hosted by the Idaho State University College of Business, showcasing an aspect of the business world. Discussion of business themes within the movie will follow the show.
ISU student Jaden Klein will perform a recital at Goranson Hall this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building on lower campus. Admission is free. Klein will be performing works by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy and Prokofiev. All are welcome to attend, but children under 6 will not be admitted.
Join Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist James Risen this Friday at 6 p.m. at Frazier Hall as he discusses his newly released New York Times bestseller “The Last Honest Man.” The book explores former Idaho Sen. Frank Church and his numerous investigations into abuses of power within the American government. The event is free and open to the public.
“Barbie” will be the feature at the Bengal Theater this Friday at 7 p.m., with shows Saturday and Sunday at 4 and 7 p.m. Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbieland. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans. ISU volleyball returns home to face Northern Colorado this Friday at 7 p.m. in Reed Gym. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for children under 18 and senior citizens, while ISU students get in free with a current Bengal ID.
ISU’s Season of Note series continues Saturday night with TOAST — The Ultimate Bread Experience showing at 7:30 p.m. in the Jensen Grand Hall at the Stephens Performing Arts Center. In honor of the 20th anniversary of the “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” movie, the trilogy will be shown at ISU’s Bengal Theater on successive Sundays, beginning Oct. 29, with “Fellowship of the Ring” at 2:30 and 6 p.m., followed by “The Two Towers” on Nov. 5 at 2:30 and 6 p.m., and “Return of the King” on Nov. 12 at 2:30 and 6 p.m. The story tells of Middle Earth and the smallest of people, the Hobbits, who are drawn into a clash between good and evil as the world of humans, elves and dwarves face the dark forces of Sauron. The 2:30 p.m. shows will be the original theatrical versions with subtitles, while the 6 p.m. shows will be the extended editions of the movies without subtitles.
