High runoff in the Salmon River means a delay in recovering the body of a boater who was thrown into the water in a Tuesday accident, authorities said.

Custer County Search and Rescue members found the body of Robert Gray around noon Wednesday while using a helicopter to search for the Mills Creek, Washington, boater. Gray’s body was spotted submerged in a logjam below the Boundary Creek launch on the Middle Fork Salmon River, not far from where his raft was lodged, authorities said.

Gray was 63.

The Custer County Sheriff’s Office reported that Gray was thrown from his boat at First Bend, downstream from the Boundary Creek boat launch. His family members reported the accident around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. They said his raft hit a logjam and he was thrown into the river.

“Tired and cold (Gray) could not self-rescue and was carried away by the swift current,” the Sheriff’s Office reported in a news release.

High water and swift currents are preventing search and rescue members from removing Gray’s body from the river, the Sheriff’s Office stated. Recovery efforts will resume when the river’s level drops enough that rescuers can safely remove the body.
