BOISE — A perfect 10.
The final score won't show it, but Snake River dominated Fruitland and won its 10th football state championship, tied for the most in Idaho.
The Grizzlies tacked on a late touchdown to make the final score 36-21, but the Panthers were in complete control throughout, flexing their supremacy on defense and moving the ball at will.
Sean Miller orchestrated touchdown drives on Snake River's first two possessions, hitting David Serna and Wyatt Vogler to put the Panthers in front 13-0 early. Miller controlled a steady offensive attack all night and finished with 247 yards and three touchdowns through the air.
“Sean did a great job of reading (the defense) and making great throws,” said Snake River coach Jeff Dalley. “Our receivers ran good routes and caught the ball. It was exciting to watch it all come together tonight.”
Snake's defense was relentless in the first quarter, giving up an average of 2.1 yards per play. The Grizzles were stubborn and stuck with the run for much of their first four drives, but eventually aborted the ground game and tested the Panthers' secondary.
At first, it worked.
Both of Fruitland's pass plays on its next drive went for big gains, and Jerred Seamons hit Casey Rodriguez with a 27-yarder to cut the lead to 21-7 with just under five minutes left in the first half.
It took Snake River seven plays to effectively erase the touchdown, as Miller and Volger totaled 63 yards to get the Panthers down to Fruitland's 1-yard line. Payden Dalley walked in from there, his second touchdown of the half, to give Snake River a commanding 28-7 lead.
It wouldn't get any better for the Grizzlies.
On the final drive of the half, Fruitland drove all the way down to Snake River's 7-yard line and had a first down and goal to go.

The Panthers erased any momentum and glimmer of hope the Grizzles could muster going into halftime.
And on the other side of the break it was more of the same.
Fruitland botched a punt to set Snake River up 30 yards from putting the game away.
Three plays later, Miller threw a 27-yard pass to Cole Hrabik to give the Panthers an insurmountable 36-7 lead.
The Grizzlies hung tough and managed two more scores before the final whistle, but the air was out of their championship hopes before Snake's final score.
The dominating performance was nothing new or unexpected for Snake River, who trounced every opponent this season other than 4A Preston.
“I don't know that (a state championship) was ever in the plans,” Jeff Dalley said. “I think in the back of our minds we knew that we had a chance. We thought we had a good enough squad that we could have a chance to be here, and to say that I knew they'd be this dominant from the beginning — no. But once it all started clicking I knew we had something special.”
Dalley described his team as blue collar, taking lunch pales and hard hats to work.
“We've kind of had a rough-neck standard this year,” Miller said. “... We've been working since summer and it's been great so to come out here and finish it like that. It's unbelievable.”
Snake River's defense has been the face of the team all season, and the unit turned in another stellar performance on Friday.
“I don't know what to say about our defense. It's been the heart and soul of our team all year,” Jeff Dalley said. “Every time that there's been a challenge they've risen to the challenge and they've carried this team. … We just stressed this whole week, 'Hey, we've got 11 guys. Every one of you has a responsibility. Take care of your responsibility.' And they did that tonight.”
The defense didn't force any turnovers like it has in recent weeks, but it never allowed Fruitland to sustain drives and bottled up the run game. The Grizzlies' leading rusher was Kennon Smith with 45 yards.
Seamons went 9-of-19 through the air for 167 yards and three touchdowns. Smith led the team in receiving with 54 yards.
Vogler led Snake River in rushing and receiving, with 60 and 63 yards, respectively.
Miller said many members of the team have been dreaming of this day since the fifth grade.
They don't have to dream anymore.
