AMERICAN FALLS — Finding homes for animals in a shelter can be a daunting task, especially when they are not spayed or neutered. Three local ladies have decided to make it their job to help these pound puppies find homes and created the American Falls New Leash on Life Foundation.
The idea behind the foundation all stems from the efforts of Dana Flandro-Kline, Tammy Herbst and the city of American Falls animal control officer Judi Fehringer.
In her job with the city, Herbst and Flandro-Kline have seen Fehringer go above and beyond her job title to save an animal’s life.
Whether it’s going to yard sales and picking up spare kennels or picking up an injured dog on the side of the road, Herbst and Flandro-Kline both saw the need to organize an event to help animals and the city’s shelter.
The first annual “Waggin’, Walkin’, Barkin’ Doggie Parade” will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, in the American Falls City Park. Check-in starts at 9 a.m. and the parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian’s signature on the registration form.
The cost to register is $10 and includes a bandana, bottle of water and dog treats. All dogs should be “dog friendly” and on a leash at all times.
The parade route is two miles or less and will start and end at the American Falls City Park. Following the parade, there will be a raffle of items to pamper and spoil your dog. Samples of the baskets are on display at Rockland Pharmacy. Raffle tickets can also be purchased there at a cost of one for $1 or six for $5. It is not required to be present at the raffle.
