The National Weather Service has extended a freeze warning for East Idaho through Tuesday morning, with temperatures expected to drop as low as 27 degrees.
East Idaho got a taste of winter Sunday morning with an inch or two of snow falling in the Island Park and Teton Pass areas.
Sub-freezing temperatures are expected across East Idaho from late Monday night through 10 a.m. Tuesday. Areas under the freeze warning include Pocatello, Chubbuck, Idaho Falls, Ammon, Blackfoot, Firth, Shelley, Rexburg, Burley, Rupert, American Falls, Aberdeen, Arbon, Fort Hall, St. Anthony, Rigby, Heyburn, Declo, Raft River, Oakley, Atomic City, Mud Lake, Idaho National Laboratory and Craters of the Moon National Monument.
Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Residents should take steps to protect tender plants and pets from the cold.
The freeze warning was initially declared for late Sunday night through 10 a.m. Monday in East Idaho as the coldest temps of the fall season descended upon the region.
Despite the freeze warning, the weather service's extended forecast through December calls for slightly above-normal temperatures and near-normal precipitation throughout East Idaho.
