POCATELLO — Fowler “Chuck” Humphrey was elected commander of Pocatello American Legion Post 4 at its March 11 meeting, succeeding Chip Wanglin, who served in the position for three years.
Humphrey is a Vietnam War veteran who served as a platoon leader in the 1st Infantry Division from September 1965 to September 1966. He is a lifetime member of the American Legion, the nation’s largest veterans organization.
Also elected were Bruno Himmler as first vice commander, John White as second vice commander — reelected to the position — and John Wagner as post chaplain. Gary Davis was elected post historian, Chester Avery as sergeant-at-arms, and G.A. “Woody” Woodman was reappointed post adjutant and finance officer.
Chartered in 1920, one year after the national Legion was founded at a two-day meeting in Paris in March 1919, Post 4 has 200 members and is affiliated with the Idaho Department of the American Legion.
The post supports several activities each year, including an oratorical contest, Boys State, Memorial Day and Veterans Day programs at the Field of Heroes, American Legion Baseball and a food convoy conducted by the American Legion’s Idaho Department.
Post 4 meets the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Bannock County Veterans Memorial Building. Any veteran who has served 180 days in the military since Dec. 7, 1941, is eligible to join.
Veterans wanting to join can contact Humphrey at 208-241-7499 or humpflow@isu.edu.
