POCATELLO — The Center Street Underpass project is officially underway.
Crews are repairing the gateway to Pocatello’s historic downtown, installing new retaining walls and safety features at the underpass that 10,000 drivers use daily.
Workers completed waterline replacements, abutment preservation and storm drainage installation in 2025 before the project delayed in June following a comprehensive review and required approvals from Union Pacific Railroad.
With the required permits obtained, current work focuses on excavation and shoring to support upcoming structural improvements including repaired abutments, new retaining walls, updated sidewalks and refreshed fascia and portal features at the pedestrian tunnels.
The underpass has undergone several revisions since its creation in 1945 to address flooding and improve quality.
The Blackfoot-based Cannon Builders crews are working with a full-service civil engineering group with locations in Idaho and Utah, Civil Science, which is providing construction engineering and inspection services, to install soldier pile shoring along the southwest side of the underpass, according to a city news release.
Pedestrian access remains available via the north pedestrian tunnel during construction.
Public Works Director Tom Kirkman said crews are focused on excavation and one retaining wall, with one traffic lane possibly reopening in about six weeks. Work will then shift to the adjacent retaining wall, closing the tunnel for another six weeks until completion in fall.
