IONA — A suicidal man died Friday after Bonneville County sheriff's deputies opened fire during an incident just before 6 a.m. in this community northeast of Idaho Falls, according to the Bonneville County Sheriff's Office.
The incident began to unfold when emergency dispatchers received a call from the man at a residence in a subdivision on Badger Creek Road indicating he was armed and threatening to kill himself, said Sgt. Bryan Lovell of the Sheriff's Office.
Deputies arrived and were working to get occupants of the residence to safety when the man emerged holding a handgun, Lovell said. Shots were fired and the man was struck by the gunfire, Lovell said.
Further details on the officer-involved shooting have not yet been released.
The man's name is being withheld pending notification of family members.
Deputies began life-saving measures after the man was shot until Idaho Falls Ambulance personnel arrived to assist, but the man was declared dead at the scene, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The man was the only person injured during the incident.
The Sheriff's Office requested the East Idaho Critical Incident Task Force respond to investigate. The task force draws investigators from uninvolved law enforcement agencies across Eastern Idaho for critical incidents.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is the lead agency on this investigation, assisted by Idaho State Police and police departments from Idaho Falls, Chubbuck, Blackfoot, Pocatello and Rigby, along with the Teton County and Bingham County sheriff's offices and other outside agencies.
According to the Bonneville County Sheriff's Office, the incident poses no threat to the public and the investigation remains ongoing.
