A Boise man who was shot by police after stealing multiple vehicles and leading officers from multiple agencies on a pursuit has been sentenced to prison.
Jake Cottrell, 40, was sentenced to 40 years in prison by Ada County District Judge Nancy Baskin, according to a news release from the Ada County Prosecutor’s Office. Cottrell pleaded guilty in June 2022 to two counts of aggravated assault upon law enforcement one count of robbery. Multiple other charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.
Cottrell will be eligible for parole after serving 20 years of his sentence.
“This incident reached many corners of Ada County, and as a result, law enforcement from nearly every local jurisdiction stepped in to apprehend this suspect,” Ada County Prosecutor Jan Bennetts said in the release.
On June 9, 2022, in Boise, Cottrell exchanged gunfire with Idaho Department of Correction probation and parole officers, then fled the scene in a vehicle he stole from his neighbor, the release said. He then stole another vehicle at gunpoint in Eagle and led “law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit” until he was stopped in downtown Meridian.
Cottrell and officers then exchanged gunfire until Cottrell was shot; he was hospitalized and no officers were injured. Investigators found 14 shell casings from firearms in Cottrell’s possession at the scene.
