Picking a top 10 is always difficult, that goes without saying. However, the films on this list all stood out for a variety of reasons. Whether groundbreaking in story, cast, or just wildly entertaining, each one is a notable example of what made 2018 such a good year to go to the movies.
10. “A Simple Favor”: While Paul Feig’s “A Simple Favor” isn’t a “great” film, the characters and wild mystery make for an incredibly entertaining movie. A neo-noir about a mommy blogger trying to solve the disappearance of her mysterious best friend, the twists and turns of the story create a film both easy to digest and memorable.
9. “Searching”: One of the most original genre films of 2018, “Searching” is notable for not only its unique method of storytelling but also its fantastic cast. Starring John Cho, the movie’s simple premise of a dad trying to find his missing daughter quickly turns dark as her secret life becomes uncovered.
8. “Isle of Dogs”: Wes Anderson’s stop-motion animation is, at its core, an epic folktale about light and dark as told through the eyes of a young boy. Charmingly absurd, “Isle of Dogs” is a visually delightful modern adaptation of the classic “boy and his dog” story.
7. “Won’t You Be My Neighbor”: A glimpse into the life of America’s kindest TV host, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” is a poignant tribute to Fred Rogers. Its patient look into the life and legacy of Fred Rogers and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood through photos, never-before-seen video, and interviews with friends and family paints a heartfelt picture of the iconic humanitarian.
6. “Hereditary”: The all consuming horror-drama of “Hereditary” is as hideous as it is riveting. About a family trying to cope after the death of their matriarch, the story is turned on its head to create an unsettling environment that lingers long after the closing credits. Absolutely unlike anything before it, the slow-burning lead to the traumatic finale is spearheaded by Toni Collette’s commandeering performance.
5. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”: Wonderfully exuberant, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” pulls you into its interdimensional universe faster than lightning, though it doesn’t hesitate to slow down when needed. Visually amazing with a bold storyline to match, it’s a perfect example of what superhero movies should be. Reinvigorating, what makes “Into the Spider-Verse” so great is its protagonist, Miles Morales.
4. “Thoroughbreds”: Unapologetically dark, “Thoroughbreds” centers around the false friendship of two rich teenagers and a plot to murder. Its themes of contemporary isolation in the modern age and the lack of empathy it causes is as refreshing as it is shocking. Witty and unpredictable, the teen thriller-comedy is a standout for 2018.
3. “Widows”: A masterpiece of both visuals and story, “Widows” is a true cinematic experience. A heist thriller from the writer of “Gone Girl” and “Sharp Objects,” the stellar ensemble cast make the film a true standout. Thoughtfully crafted, “Widows” is superbly elegant with the perfect balance of grittiness and depth.
2. “Paddington 2”: Truly the best children’s film of 2018, “Paddington 2” is quality entertainment for children and adults alike. Irresistibly sweet and joyful, its bright warmth reminds you of the importance of family without being preachy. Overfilling with charm, Paddington’s heartfelt philosophy of being compassionate and affectionate enhances the adorable legacy of the bear.
1. “Annihilation”: Alex Garland’s ambitious follow-up to “Ex Machina,” “Annihilation” proves itself a strong sci-fi film. Conceptually intriguing, its dreamlike visuals drag you in. Equal parts beautiful and dark, “Annihilation’s” emphasis on humanity’s insignificance and Earth’s constant state of change is quietly terrifying, making sure to leave behind a strong impression.
