Wayne Kirby’s football recruitment has hit an entirely different level.

BYU offered the Highland defensive lineman a football scholarship after Kirby visited the Cougars’ campus Saturday. Army has also entered into the fray for Kirby’s services with a full-ride offer.

“The more I watch their film, … I just get more excited about the offer,” Kirby said of the Cougars. “They’re a great football team and not just that, they’ve got great academics and standards.”

Former Highland star Taysom Hill is BYU’s current starting quarterback.

Kirby is a member of the LDS church and said he has a comfort level with BYU because the coaches understand his faith.

“Just knowing that the LDS church owns that school and they have the same standards that I’ve grown up with my whole life,” Kirby said. “It kind of makes it easy because I’ve been on other visits to other 

colleges. They kind of pushed me toward some stuff that wasn’t OK. And I know when I go up there, they’ll have people that support me.”

Kirby’s college recruitment started to pick up speed following his junior season. He was an anchor along a Rams defensive line that smothered opponents and held teams to 12.9 points per game on the way to an undefeated season and a 5A state championship.

Kirby participated in an All-Poly football camp earlier this month in Utah — a camp that drew more than 500 participants and over 100 college coaches, reportedly. Kirby was a defensive lineman MVP.

Off of that performance, Kirby has started to draw interest from several other schools, including Wyoming and UNLV.

He’s also been in contact with coaches from Boise State since the end of the 2014-15 academic school year.

The list of suitors lining up to go after Kirby, a 3-star prospect by Scout.com and the No. 1 rated defensive tackle in Idaho, should continue to grow. Kirby said he expects to verbally commit after his senior season wraps up with Highland.

“I just want to get to know colleges a little more, get to know the program a little more,” Kirby said. “I don’t want to put all my eggs into one basket.”

Kirby’s other offers are from Washington State, Idaho, Nevada, Eastern Washington, Weber State and Montana.
